California has officially banned private prisons and detention centers
Californias Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a new bill that will get rid of private prisons and privately-run immigration detention centers. Facilities in use will be phased out by 2028. Starting January 1, 2020, California will be prohibited from renewing contracts or signing new ones with a private prison company.
In a statement on Friday, Governor Newsom stared that private prisons contribute to over incarceration. California currently has 4 contracts with for profit, private prison companies that operate for criminal detention. There are also 4 civil detention centers that are operated by private companies in the state.
