A school farm right outside of NYC has revolutionized education

Green Chimneys is a school on a farm outside of NYC that uses animals to help special-needs children learn. The school has been a revolutionary leader in using animals to help children learn since 1948 and now has 2 campuses with 243 students and even more animals! The schools founder, Dr. Ross believed that animals could help kids learn and help emotionally. It can be easier to develop relationships with animals than people for kids with behavioral issues.

Students from kindergarten through high school are served at Green Chimneys. The school is partly funded by the New York State Education Department. Some students take part in the”Learn and Earn” program where they get a small stipend in exchange for working with the animals, completing chores on the farm or tending garden plots.
