Ikea now grows lettuce inside of shipping containers outside the store
Furniture retailer IKEA is on a mission to improve their environmental impact. At a recent sustainability event at an IKEA store in western Germany, they demonstrated one of their LED-powered shipping containers managed by circular farming company Bonbio. Inside each shipping container is a hydroponic system that has 4 shelves and holds up to 3,600 plants.

Just like most indoor farming, the system uses 90% less water than growing in a field. The lettuce is fed nutrients extracted from food waste, some of which are leftovers from the stores restaurants. The LED lights in the containers are powered by renewable energy. According to an IKEA rep, 15-20 kilograms of salad can be harvested daily. This new concept will have a pilot run in stores outside of Malmo and Helsingborg, Sweden. The lettuce will initially be served to employees until the company is satisfied with production.
