Portland is finally investing in environmental justice education for its public schools

How many schools are teaching about environmental justice? Well there’s one public high school in Oregon that is teaching a course but students are asking that it be taught in all Portland public schools. This year, students around the world have been walking out of class to protest climate change and Portland is no different.

Early last month, student activists met with superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero who made a commitment to following through. A few weeks later, the school board allocated $200,000 to climate-justice education for the coming school year. Where will this money go?

To hire a full-time coordinator, integrate climate justice into social studies and science curriculums as well as create a separate course in each high school.
