Hospital in Boston is feeding patients thanks to its rooftop farm
Annually, an average of 5,000-7,000 pounds of food are harvested from the rooftop farm at the Boston Medical Center. The farm was designed and installed by Somerville-based, Recover Green Roofs. The 2,658 square foot farm has more than 25 crops including herbs, cucumbers, beans, a variety of greens and more. Watering of the crops can be controlled via a smartphone which helps with water conservation.
The farm provides fresh, local produce to their hospitalized patients, cafeterias, Demonstration Kitchen, and Preventive Food Pantry. Whats even more awesome is that the rooftop farm reduces the hospitals carbon footprint and energy use, including transporting food to and from the hospital. The two beehives were painted by pediatric patients at the hospital. Higher ground farm manages all the growing on the farm.
