University of California dropping all fossil fuel investments
Top financial officers at the University of California made a big announcement this Tuesday. The university will be dropping its fossil fuel investments that make up their close to $84 million pension and endowment funds. This decision comes after months of pressure from faculty and students. Coincidentally, the same day the announcement was made, the president and chancellors at UC declare a climate emergency.
UC President Janet Napolitano said. “This declaration reaffirms UC’s commitment to addressing one of the greatest existential threats of our time.”
Not only do they believe the fossil fuel investments are both a financial and environmental risk.
