Community of indigenous women are documenting traditional knowledge before it disappears
📍 (Peru)
Generations are leaving and new people are moving in, but indigenous women in a Peru community want to make sure their traditional knowledge survives. For over a year they have been recording and editing videos that document knowledge about medicinal plants and edible fruits. Why are they worried the knowledge will disappear? A highway is split the community in half, migrants are moving into the area and forests have been cut down. It’s now becoming more common to speak Spanish instead of their indigenous language, Awajun.
Thanks to their work with non profit Conservation International, they were given phones and training on how to edit videos. So far 15 videos have been recorded and will be available on a new site in the upcoming future. If all goes well, the non profit will duplicate this project in other indigenous areas around the world.
