The magic of a 20 second hug and 6 second kiss

What do a 20 second hug and a 6 second kiss have in common? Two experts say it triggers the release of oxytocin and basically makes your relationships better. One of those experts is Dr. John Gottman, who is world renowned for his work on marriage and parenting.

According to Dr. Gottman, founder of the Gottman Institute, the release of oxytocin builds relationships by calming down the fear center of the brain. Ultimately it increases bonding between partners and helps them connect. One study measured the CAR (cortisol awakening response) and found that the day after social interactions with hugs participants displayed lower CARs. After monitoring participants, they found a direct correlation between hugs and lower stress levels. An older study from 2005 found that hugging more is linked to lower blood pressure and heart rate in premenopausal women.

Not only does a 20 second hug decrease cortisol levels (aka, stress), but add that 6 second kiss in there and you have a recipe for magic. Love magic that is! Dr. Gottman recommends starting with one 6 second kiss per day for couples who may be struggling. He says “A six-second kiss is a kiss with potential”. Do it every day for two weeks and see how you and your partner feel after that. Bonus points if you journal your feelings daily!
