9 year old adopts oldest dog in the shelter
9 year old Raven told her mom Melissa
“I want to adopt an old dog. One that no one else wants.”
Although Melissa encouraged against it, Raven was adamant on saving a dog’s life. She told her mom that she’s aware dogs die in the shelter, and they don’t deserve to die alone.
The story gets even sweeter! They welcome Kaylee home from the shelter and then find out something new. Kaylee has cancer and the vet says she has 2 months left to live. Despite the trying emotional time, the family put their energy into making those the best 2 months ever for Raven. Of course, Raven gave them nothing but love and joy back.
"[She has taught] my children... compassion in a way I've never dreamed possible. They happily gave up a vacation to Disney World because we needed the money to pay for Kaylee’s care. They told me, “That’s ok. We wouldn’t want to go without her anyway.”
That was an excerpt from Melissa’s story that she sent to the Petco Foundation. The story won the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, which granted $10,000 to Kaylee’s former shelter, the BARCS. Then Melissa won another award, which granted her $25,000. The money was again given to BARCS, totaling $35,000. All of the funds will be used to support dogs who are waiting to find their forever homes.
Although the two months have passed, Kaylee is still alive with a loving home and family. ❥
