Dubbed the “women’s wall”, the government estimates between 3.5 and 5 million women lined across Highway 66 to form a continuous human chain. Why? As a method of peacefully protesting the religious ban that prevents women of menstruating age from entering one the sacred Hindu temples. The women also wanted to create awareness regarding the gap in gender equality.

The event was organized by the Left Democratic Front after male devotees threatened violence to women who attempted to enter the temple, despite the Supreme Court ruling in their favor back in September. The Kerala government united with volunteers from over 170 organizations. Thanks to social media, the news and word of mouth, women in the southern state of Kerala were able to find out about the event.
