Couple owns book store to expose children to black authors
📍 (St. Louis, MO)
Jeffrey and Pamela Blair realized their kids weren’t given any African American books to read in school. So what did the couple do? They took out their life savings to open EyeSeeMe because they wanted their children to feel proud about being African American. The storefront, located in St. Louis, has over 3,000 titles that chronicles African American history and culture.
"Being in EyeSeeMe does something to you because, for the first time, you are standing in a space where everything looks like you," says Pamela Blair. "For a black family, it is like, 'Where has this been all my life?'"
The couple also runs a very popular summer school program and after school tutoring. They also visit schools and run book fairs as well as professional development workshops for educators.
