The world's first image of a black hole has officially been discovered
29 year old Katie Bouman has spent years developing the algorithm needed to get the world’s first image of a black hole. Last June at Harvard University, her algorithm worked and there it was, an image of the black hole right at the center of the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy. Yet the world wouldn’t actually see the picture for almost a year. On Wednesday, the picture of the black hole (and the one below of Katie) went viral across social media after the secret was finally out.
According to TIME, Katie says that it was a “team effort”. There were several women who worked on the Event Horizon Telescope team, but the majority were male. In a field where women are a minority, maybe this news will shift that.
