After graduating high school, teen meets dad at border to celebrate

 📍 (Laredo, Texas)

When Sarai Ruiz graduated high school, only her mother was able to attend since her dad was deported to Mexico when she was only 4 years old. After he got deported, Sarai and her mom moved around to be closer to him, which landed them in Texas. So when she graduated high school, he wasn’t able to attend. That didn’t stop her from celebrating by meeting her dad at the border for hugs and happy tears after the graduation ceremony.

Sarai posted the picture and video of the heartwarming moment on her Facebook and it went viral. She met her father at Puente de Las Americas (Gateway to the Americas Bridge) so that he can see her in her cap and gown.

Here’s what the graduate told NBC:

“Since I was four...All this time has passed and it's true, nothing could ever separate us," she said. "A border's not going to separate us, not a bridge, not being able to cross...[It's] not going to change that fact that we're still family."

Sarai will start studying at the University of Texas at Austin this fall.
