Richard Gere delivers food and supplies to stranded migrants on humanitarian ship

A humanitarian ship has been stranded in the Mediterranean sea for over the last week. This past Friday actor Richard Gere visited the rescued migrants that are stranded on the ship. He carried food and supplies onto the ship known as the Open Arms. Italy and Malta have rejected the ships requests to enter its ports. Aboard the Open arms are 121 people, many who have left Libya to escape the war going on. These human beings are looking for a place of refuge and Gere felt compelled to help.

The associated press reports that while visiting Italy, Gere got in contact with the Spanish charity Open Arms to find out how he can be of assistance. Two days later, he was loading a boat with supplies that would then be delivered to the stranded refugees.

After his visit to the ship, he joined a news conference and asked the world to help the charity and the migrants. While asking the public for to support the organization, he also said

“The most important thing for these people here is to be able to get to a free port, to get off the boat, to get on land and start a new life.

Gere also urged Italy to help the migrants on the ship and compared the situation to what’s going on in the United States. He said,

"This has to stop everywhere on this planet now. And it will stop if we say stop,"
