Texas mom of 5 starts lettering project to comfort nursing home residents

Shannon realized that those in nursing homes would be without visitors during this unusual period of isolation. The Texas mother of 5 decide to start a project with the intention of reminding the nursing home residents that they are not alone by sending them letters. She decided to call her project Letters to Nursing Homes and then reached out to her community of letter writers on Instagram, asking if anyone would like to join. Shannon ended up with dozens of letters, and some cute artwork by children to send to local nursing homes. Here’s what Shannon had to say about her inspiration to start the project:

Thinking and reading about all of the elderly across the country locked down in their homes without the ability to have family visits made my heart break with sadness. Yes, phone calls and video chat and text messaging is lovely and wonderful, but there really is something quite special about receiving a tangible, hold-it-in-your-hands, letter in the mail that I wanted to help as many people as possible experience during this difficult time.

There is definitely a simple joy that comes from not just receiving a letter, but writing one as well. I prefer writing with a pen and paper over typing on this computer any day. There is just something so special about it and with the rise of technology, many have forgotten that. Shannon is determined to inspire others to write more letters and enjoy the simple things in life like a beautiful sunset. She has a blog called A Forever Letter where she also sells elegant stationary sets.
