Publix is buying excess food from farmers and donating it to food banks
Schools and restaurants are closed, which has left farmers around the country with excess food that has been going to waste. When supermarket chain Publix found out about this, they decided they needed to step up and do something about it. The company has started an initiative to get that food to those in need. Publix is purchasing all excess food from farmers across the US and will be donating it to them to Feeding America food banks.
"As a food retailer, we have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the needs of families and farmers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic," said Todd Jones, chief executive officer of the Lakeland, Fla.,-based grocery chain.
Feeding America estimates that an additional 17 million people will be facing food insecurity.
