Washington State Will Offer Free College Tuition To Thousands of Students

Washington passed a new act last week that would provide free or reduced tuition for lower and middle income students attending community colleges and public universities. If your family earns $50,000 a year or less, you get full tuition support and fees. For anyone who’s family earns about $90,000 a year, you will get partial scholarships.

If you have lived in Washington state for at least a year, you would qualify but only if you didn’t move there specifically to attend college. The funds for this new law will come from businesses in the state like Amazon and Microsoft. Basically the state places a surcharge on companies that pay the business and occupation tax. According to the NY Times, the largest tech firms would pay a higher rate which can be up to $7 million a year, The bill, which has already been endorsed by Amazon, is still being reviewed by Washington state Governor Inslee.
